The Power of Leading with Heart: A Personal Reflection
by Sandrine Pons, SNP Group
Let me share a story from my journey that deeply reaffirmed my belief in the power of empathy, diversity, and leading by example.
Early in my career, I was leading a team on a high-stakes project within the tech sector. Resistance was palpable; change was difficult, and team members hesitated to embrace new approaches. It was clear that, despite the strategic clarity I offered, something essential was missing: trust and connection.
Instead of pushing harder with policies and deadlines, I decided to step back and listen—really listen. I held one-on-one conversations, encouraged open dialogue, and made it clear I valued their concerns. I also shared my own vulnerabilities and challenges, aiming to create a safe space for honesty.
What I found was eye-opening. Many team members felt unheard and undervalued, which fueled their reluctance to fully commit to the change. By showing genuine care and leading through example—demonstrating resilience, patience, and respect—we began to rebuild trust. I emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusion, highlighting how different perspectives could be our greatest strength, especially during times of transformation.
The results were inspiring. Not only did the team surpass our project goals, but we also created a workplace where every individual felt truly valued. More importantly, I learned that impactful leadership isn’t just about directing from the front. It’s about connecting at a human level, inspiring courage, and fostering an environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute.
This experience reinforced a vital lesson: lasting change is built on kindness, authenticity, and a deep respect for diversity. Transformation isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon—measured in moments of connection, courage, and making a genuine difference.
I hope that sharing this story encourages others to lead with heart. Because, at the end of the day, the real power of leadership lies in caring for others and making the difference that lasts.
