This is a story from the early part of my career. At the time I was leading a highly diverse group of industry experts through a mission-critical initiative. In doing so, I brought a leadership style rooted in inspiration, kindness, and humour – a combination that fostered trust, openness, and high performance in equal measure.

From the outset, I focused on building relationships with each expert individually, taking the time to understand their perspectives, experience, and motivations. This early investment was critical to establishing a foundation of trust and mutual respect, which became the cornerstone of the team’s ability to collaborate effectively under pressure. I would end up following this approach of relationship building for the rest of my career – the key to building teams that build success.

The task at hand was complex: building consensus and a strong, forward-looking set of specific expert recommendations for a supranational regulatory body. In this task we needed to balance cutting-edge technology considerations with broader policy objectives that would support long-term innovation and competition. It was a high-stakes challenge with no single “right” path, and I faced off against a wide range of perspectives around my table.

Rather than narrowing the conversation, I created space to open it, ensuring every voice was heard, and that each participant could meaningfully contribute their experience, ideas, and concerns. This was not about managing opinions; it was about unlocking collective intelligence, drawing on the group’s diversity to sharpen thinking and elevate outcomes.

I encouraged dialogue that was rigorous but respectful, infused the process with humour and humanity, and anchored the team in a shared sense of purpose. By doing so, we didn’t just reach agreement – we delivered a best-in-class outcome that fully reflected the richness of expertise in the room and set a new bar for how inclusive, innovation-minded leadership can work.

Ultimately, my approach is about leading with vision and empathy, turning complexity into clarity, and aligning great minds around solutions that matter.
